The Age of Fake News: How Does It Impact Social Cohesion and Democracy in Indonesia?

Fake news as a phenomenon has now created real-world consequences. Saracen, the online syndicate and producer of fake news in Indonesia, has exploited ethnic, racial, and religious differences. Through social networks, fake news has spread with lightning speed and is often unchallenged and uncorrected. As a result, it has threatened social cohesion and Indonesia’s security. This article aims to explore the Indonesian government’s legal and non-legal measures for addressing fake news as a business model in the digital age. Its secondary aim is to explore a number of important and unintended consequences that arise as a result of overreactions in addressing the phenomenon of fake news.
